Bearer of Light (by Olivia)

 Open.

Open.

Awaken.

Now.

The world had flipped upside down for a brief moment in time as I felt consciousness and thoughts pour into my previously undisturbed mind. My eyes locked shut, I completely allowed my body to exist in whatever this environment may be.

‘Where am I?’

‘What am I doing?’

‘How am I here?’

These phrases swarmed my brain, bees of panic attacking my logical frame of thinking as my heart palpitated in a state of distress. As if my head were a ticking time bomb, set to erupt at any given moment.

‘Really… Where am I?’

Open.

The thought once more pressed against me, ushering deeper. Deeper within, harder toward my mind’s eye.

Please… Open.

I sensed this to be of no threat to me. I realized this as my once fear filled heart had been replaced with one of slight ease and repose, my tenseness noticeably lessening as a tie would untangle.

I am asking you… to open.

The calling became clearer.

Open your eyes.

And I did just that.

As my orbs wandered , my vision attempted to scan the mysterious world I had found myself a part of. This world around me was filled with… glowing beings of light.

Twinkling millions of miles across this… sky, as I had sensed it to be, their glimmers never ceasing to explode with sparkling rays of gold, bathing this world in other worldly streams of heaven.

It was… bright. So intensely bright, my heart almost couldn’t handle it.

Among these rays of gleams, I allowed myself to float through this weightless terrain… My body truly felt as if it were that of a cloud. The mist that follows the deepest of storms. A puff of smoke from the chimney’s fiery heart. Of… mere nothingness, yet filled with invisible essence.

As my form fluttered across the skies, my curious soul witnessed even more beauty. So much more of it.

Orbs of blue, dust filled with sunset pinks and lavender purples, bodies of matter filled with silent darkness, yet beaming with quiet intrigue…

I let a small gasp escape my lips as my heart joined the world in its enchantments, dancing along the whispering dust as the streams of gold wrapped around my form, almost as if encouraging me to go further, myself imagining them releasing magical giggles as they removed themselves from my body, instead leading me to the place I was to go.

How had I known this information…?

I… couldn’t understand the answer.

As I dashed forward, the noise of vigorous energy graced my ears, a sound quite unknown to that of the physical world. I could not quite describe the resonance. Almost a chime, though with a trace of… indescribable ringing, that of the sea, gently rustling yet crashing with deep emotion.

At once, I came to a stop, and the once circulating rain of lights vanished within an instant.

The previous beautifully glowing vastness of eternity had flashed to pitch black, as quickly as the snapping of fingers.

Dwelling in the silence, my form began to drift slowly; much slower than that of before. I could sense the energy once previously surrounding and influencing my body’s abilities had been transferred out of my system completely.

I felt just as I had toward the beginning… lost. And unsure of where my state of consciousness had taken me.

“Look up.”

My ears perked at the sound of a voice, wait, the voice! The voice from the very beginning of this seemingly endless journey of light.

My head immediately turned upward at the melodic tone, my eyes frozen in place once locked on to the owner of this other-worldly pitch…

The view of this woman left me in a state of disbelief. Her hair, made of the golden stars of the sky, her pupils exact replicas of the moon, her dress sewn with shimmers of star dust collected in a mass, twinkling in the midst of the black abyss… She was not human, that was for certain.

“Rise, bearer of light.”

I listened to her words, though I couldn’t help but wonder…

Bearer of light? What could that mean?

Her hand, seemingly forged of moonlight and sunlight, held an object between her shining fingertips. It shone brighter than the sun itself, rays of gold and blue surrounding the body of this miniature piece of illumination. It was as small as a screw, yet its essence and spirit had been larger than the universe itself.

“Pave the way forward.”

Pave the way…?

What way was I to-

Within an instant, my orbs snapped open, a sharp gasp escaping my lungs as I rose up. It took me a moment to adjust to my surroundings, finding that…

I was back. I was sitting upon my bed, gazing at my all too familiar bedroom.

A dream.

That was… a dream.

Though, how could that have been a mere dream?

I allowed a sigh to escape me once more. How could my senses have believed so strongly in that world?

I gazed at my own hand, recalling the object that had almost been placed directly into my palm. I could still feel the atmosphere of the universe in the past pressing against my body, the torrents of light remaining etched into my mind.

I shook my head, attempting to regain my senses into the physical world around me as I allowed a stretch to run through my arms, lying upon my pillow once more, completely defeated and out of breath from the inner journey I had taken to the skies above.

Though I attempted as much as I could to fall back into a state of slumber, my brain demanded an answer to the unsolved questions racking my still dreamlike state of mind.

'What was that place?'

'How did I arrive there?'

'And most of all…'

….

'Why had I been called a bearer of light?'
